Átmano mokshártham jagad hitáya cha, ‘For one's own salvation and for the welfare of the world’
Ramakrishna Math (Gadadhar Ashrama), situated in South Calcutta, has its spiritual & social legacy. At the behest of Ramakrishna Math & Mission, the then Sanghadhakshya Swami Shivanandaji Maharaj founded this Ashrama with his divine touch on the 17th day of November 1920, in the near proximity of Kalighat area. The Ashrama was blessed by the divinity of Swami Brahmanandaji, Swami Saradanandaji, Swami Subodhanandaji and Swami Vijnananandaji during their auspicious visits. More to say, Sri M. (Master Mahasaya) used to meditate and perform japa in this Ashrama. Hearing that, such an Ashrama would be established on the brink of Adi Ganga, near Kalikhestra, the Holy Mother expressed her delight while she was in her sick bed. After her recovery, she desired to stay in this Ashrama for sometime, which, in fact, did not materialize. But, it amply proves that, the Holy Mother had her blessing on this Ashrama. The relics of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna are kept in the temple of this Ashrama. Since the inception, Nitya Puja, Anna Bhoga, spiritual discourses etc, apart from other Socio-economic programmes for the upliftment of the poorer section of the society are being taking place regularly in this Ashrama.
